In case you were busy buying books, here’s a recap of some Northwestern and Evanston news you may have missed this week.

Sunshine family reaches settlement with university
The family of Matthew Sunshine, the 19-year-old SESP freshman who died of alcohol poisoning in June 2008, will receive $2 million from Northwestern as part of a legal settlement. While the agreement is not an admission of wrongdoing by the university, the settlement includes a rider with provisions that could alter Northwestern alcohol policy. Our friends at The Daily Northwestern have the full story.

    Northwestern appoints first Muslim chaplain
The university appointed Tahera Ahmad, a teacher at the Islamic Foundation School in Villa Park, Ill., as its first Muslim chaplain. The change came after years of lobbying by Muslim students and a fundraising effort by University Chaplain Timothy Stevens’ office. We have the whole story here.

We reserve judgment until they stop asking where Kresge is
The Northwestern administration seems to be ecstatic about this year’s incoming freshman class. Michael Mills, associate provost for enrollment, called the class “one super-talented kid after another” and said the university “hit a home run in every category.” Mills noted that the percentage of African-American students is the highest in a decade, and the percentage of Hispanic students in the class is an all-time high. Head over to our friends at The Daily for more.

The Association for Off-Campus Parties strongly disagrees
The International Association of Chiefs of Police selected Evanston to receive its top award for community policing. The city is one of four communities nationwide to receive the annual award this year. Check out Evanston Now for more.

Gin and juice to be sold separately
Snoop Dogg and Kid Cudi will be headlining A&O’s Fall Blowout concert on October 15 at Welsh-Ryan Arena. Morty “Loose Lips” Schapiro let the secret slip at Convocation, and Norris Box Office online is preparing for heavy traffic when the tickets go on sale October 1 at 10:30 a.m. We’ve got the rest of the story here.

Next he went after whoever sets the textbook prices at Norris
A journalism class watched as Sergio Serritella, sent to give the students an urban safety lecture, ran off after an apparent bicycle thief. The chase, which occurred near Medill’s Edgewater storefront on Tuesday, ended in disappointment when the cyclist got away. “I was in a suit,” said Serritella, a licensed investigator. “He was on a bike. It was his lucky day.” Rumors of a biopic starring Sylvester Stallone have yet to be confirmed. Head to Medill News for the whole story.
