Week in Review May 18: Dillo, Wildcat Welcome and NBA Jam
By

In case you were busy spray painting Week in Review's face around campus, here’s a recap of some news you may have missed this week.

Norris shelves flooded with checkerboard Vans
Mayfest decided to sell out this year, bringing ska act Reel Big Fish and Speakerboxxx-er Big Boi to Dillo Day. The two will join previously announced headliners Steve Aoki and Cold War Kids. Skank on over for the full story, and don’t forget to buy your tickets.

“We just figured there were a lot of North Dakotans here who couldn’t remember their home address,” EV1 owner shrugged
Mayor Elizabeth Tisdahl imposed a $2,000 fine on EV1 earlier this month due to 12 ordinance violations – nine of which involved Northwestern students. The mayor wrote that selling alcohol to minors presents “clear and present danger to the health, welfare and safety” of Evanston residents. Head over to our pong partners at The Daily Northwestern for the whole thing.

Plans to base housing on online polling were scrapped when Ron Paul was voted everyone’s favorite dorm
Incoming freshmen will no longer have the choice to rank options when applying for on-campus housing. Instead, they will fill out a survey and let the university determine where they end up. Calls to Assistant Dean of Housing David Hume for comment were not returned. We’ve got the full story right here.

For its part, the study abroad office will sponsor weeklong student exchange programs between Slivka and Jones
In an effort to increase student interaction across schools, Wildcat Welcome will feature altered programming in 2012. While officials have indicated they want to involve more students in larger activities, details are few and far between – so we’ll just have to assume it’ll be a weeklong campus-wide game of laser tag. Head over to The Daily for the whole story.

Sadly, the university had to rob Peter Farmer’s honorary degree to award it to Paul
Commencement speaker Paul Farmer will receive an honorary Doctor of Science degree at the ceremony. He joins Joan Ganz Cooney, the creator of Sesame Street and co-founder of the Children’s Television Workshop; William D. Nix, the Lee Otterson Professor Emeritus of Engineering at Stanford University; and Martha Minow, the Dean and Jeremiah Smith Jr. Professor of Law at Harvard Law School in this year’s group of honorees. We’ve got the full story right here.

    The shot clock’s almost up
We’re down to the wire, folks. With only a few weeks left in the school year, the NBA Jam machine in the Norris ground floor remains out of order. Tell your friends, tell your professors, write your congressmen. We can make a difference. The power is yours!
