About North by Northwestern

North by Northwestern is Northwestern University’s leading independent online publication, updated around the clock with stories about campus and culture.

We were founded in the summer of 2006 by students who wanted to take news at Northwestern online. And in the spring of 2008, we launched a quarterly magazine.

We give students a place to talk about what’s on their minds, share their passions and have conversations with readers.

We’ve been honored with more than 40 Mark of Excellence awards from the Society of Professional Journalists. The SPJ named our website the nation’s “Best Independent Online Student Publication” for 2010 — and national finalist for 2007 and 2008. Our magazine was named best in the nation by SPJ for 2009. The Associated College Press named us one of three winners in the 2008 National Online Pacemaker awards. Our extended awards list is here.
