Dean John Lavine’s potentially bogus anonymous quotes are the subject of the fifth-most prominent story on the Chicago Tribune’s Web site at the time of writing.
Lavine again said that the quotes were real but he couldn’t remember whom they were from. He said that because it was an opinion piece, the use of anonymous sources wasn’t a big deal.
The news comes after Medill senior David Spett’s Daily column, in which he contacted all 29 of Lavine’s possible sources and not one admitted to the quote.
False or not, it’s nice to see real student “watchdog” journalism holding the powerful accountable.
