Mangelsdorf to be next Weinberg dean

Sarah Mangelsdorf will take over as dean of the Weinberg College of Arts and Sciences, the university announced Monday.

Mangelsdorf, currently the dean of the liberal arts college of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, will begin her reign on August 16. The announcement ends an eight-month search which began when Daniel Linzer left the post to become university provost in September 2007. Interim dean Aldon Morris has run the school since then.

Mangelsdorf will be in charge of academics at Northwestern’s liberal arts school, to which about 4,000 students — more than half of the undergraduate student population — belong, according to the university’s Web site.

“She brings to Northwestern an outstanding record of successful scholarship and academic leadership,” Linzer said in a statement. “She possesses a strong passion for the liberal arts and sciences and a sense of excitement about the potential for extraordinary accomplishments in Weinberg College.”

Mangelsdorf became the first female dean of Illinois’ liberal arts school in 2004. She joined the psychology department there in 1991.

She called the appointment a “tremendous honor.”

“I look forward to working with Provost Linzer and with the faculty, students and alumni of Weinberg College,” she said.

    More to come.
