Northwestern president Henry S. Bienen will retire as of August 31, 2009. He made the announcement in an e-mail to “members of the Northwestern community.”
“I continue to enjoy my job immensely, but I truly believe that it is important for institutions to be refreshed regularly with new leadership,” he said.
“There is still a great deal to accomplish, and I intend to be quite busy in the next 15 months,” he said. “We will implement our enhanced financial aid program for students,” push through plans for the School of Music’s new building and “continue our efforts in several curricular initiatives, including intensifying the internationalization of the University.”
Bienen has held the post since 1995.
