Cover your ears during NU’s first test of its outdoor emergency-alert system, and stay away from the rooftops of Tech, Allison Hall, the Donald P. Jacobs Center and Harold Anderson Hall beginning at 10 a.m., unless you like the sound of sirens. It won’t cut short lecture, though: The message itself should go unheard inside most campus buildings. (Doesn’t that defeat the purpose, though?)
Then take your hands off your ears by 7 p.m. and shell out four bucks to listen to acclaimed opera man Mark Delavan give a master class. He’s adding Lutkin Hall to his list of performance venues, which includes New York City’s Metropolitan Opera and the Lyric Opera of Chicago, thanks to the School of Music.
What you missed over break:
Kellogg tied for fourth among business schools in U.S. News and World Report’s annual narcissism-provoking survey, ahead of the business schools of Dartmouth and Columbia. Maybe it’s the helping out of Olympic committees; or maybe it’s the nice bathrooms. NU’s law school grabbed a top ten spot, while SESP nabbed No. 12.
Meanwhile, hundreds of high school seniors added the “Northwestern ‘12″ network to their Facebook profiles approximately 0.1 seconds after they got admitted for the coming fall (some of whom haven’t even decided that they’re coming). Of course, that means 19,000 applicants got the ol’ rejection letter.
Those who make it to NU can be grateful they’re not at University of Kentucky. There, a student found sleeping in a car wasred-flagged with other “students of concern” for a watch list to keep track of upset students in the wake of recent school shootings.
