Without warning, Hundo closes it doors

The 1800 Club, commonly known as Hundo, unexpectedly closed its doors this weekend. The bar, a popular Northwestern student hangout, was due to close at the end of March, but students returned from Winter Break to find the place locked and the windows dark.

Last fall, The 1800 Club applied to renew its lease on its university-owned location but had its application rejected. The owner, Tony Anton, expressed bewilderment at the time but gave no indication that he intended to close before the lease expired.

When asked for comment, the university said that Anton closed the bar sometime over the weekend with “no advance notice to the university.”

An employee at Mullen’s Bar and Grill, one of Anton’s other businesses, indicated that The 1800 Club was struggling financially. “I’m not sure why, but I heard that every night it was just dead, dead, dead. I’m guessing that it just wasn’t working anymore.”

As of Monday, the mailbox for the bar’s voicemail was full, and calls to Anton were not immediately returned.
