We nearly lost to Wheaton College.

I’m…speechless. Well, almost. My four or so regular readers might remember that I’ve been making fun of men’s basketball coach Bill Carmody for several weeks because he scheduled Division III Wheaton College this year. In fact, I blocked out Dec. 14 specifically to watch this game. But then, an important community service project came up…so I missed it.

But I figured there was no way we’d actually lose to a D-III school, despite the insistence of NNN SportsNight anchor Ryan Dietz, who lives one floor below me, that we could possibly blow it.

Well, we almost did. The final score was 41-39. The “Thunder” (that’s Wheaton, guys) missed an open three at the buzzer which could have won it. Read the recap here.

I don’t feel entitled to critique the team much further, since I didn’t attend the game. But I feel like it’s my responsibility to let you all know that we nearly lost to a team which hasn’t played another D-I school in over 30 years.

The positives? The team’s 6-2 and is off to Puerto Rico for a couple of easy games. If we come back with two or three more wins, we’ll be in great shape as we finish up our non-conference schedule. But for the love of God…Wheaton College?

And read Guy Benson’s well-written column on the game when you get a chance.
