Dowd for Player of the Year
Although she graduated in June, former All-American and Tewaaraton Trophy finalist Katrina Dowd could still rake in awards for Northwestern. Dowd is up for Lacrosse Magazine’s Player of the Year award, which is based on fan voting and will be announced in December. The Women’s Lacrosse attacker finished her career at Northwestern in the record books: sixth in all-time points (267), fourth in goals (209) and ninth in assists (58). Fans can vote for Dowd here.

    Women’s Volleyball loses four straight
Women’s Volleyball continued their losing streak last weekend, losing twice on their home court against Big Ten opponents Ohio State on Friday and No. 9 Penn State on Saturday. To add insult to injury, over 1,800 fans, a season-high, attended Saturday’s “Alumnae Night” game only to watch the Nittany Lions of Penn State win. Watch for the team to play with a vengeance on the road this weekend, when the Wildcats go up against No. 20 Minnesota on Friday and Iowa on Saturday.

    THUMBS UP

Lipsky wins title at UNCG Bridgestone Golf Collegiate
Senior David Lipsky finished the UNCG Bridgestone Golf Collegiate’s tournament on Sunday shooting 14-under a par of 202, tying a school record set in 2001. His final score was good enough to place Lipsky in a tie for first place. The senior golfer nearly did not win, but a superb 5-under par drive on the final four holes placed Lipsky at the top of the leaderboard. The Northwestern Golf Team benefited from Lipsky’s final charge, and finished fifth as a team.

    Swimming and Diving drop season-openers
The Men’s and Women’s Swimming and Diving teams both lost their season-openers over the weekend on the road against Big Ten rival Indiana. The Men’s team lost the first four events to Indiana before Alex Tyler swam his way to first place in the 100-yard breaststroke. The Women’s team lost by a close margin, 158.5 to 135.5, despite a strong showing from freshmen, who swam away with a pair of race wins. Both teams jump back into the water Friday evening at 5 p.m. for a home meet to face off against Purdue.

Armstrong scores big, leads Field Hockey to victory
Sophomore Chelsea Armstrong scored all four of Northwestern’s tallies on Sunday in a 4-2 road win over Iowa. Armstrong’s effort won her Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week for the fourth time this season. The Northwestern Field Hockey team hopes to continue its success this weekend at home against two top-twenty opponents, No. 9 Penn State on Friday and No. 11 Michigan State on Sunday. The Wildcats are still in the hunt for the 2010 Big Ten Field Hockey Championship, which will likely be decided this weekend.
