By

Nerdwestern is about to get a whole lot nerdier. Beginning this Fall Quarter, Northwestern students can major in neuroscience for the first time, according to The Daily Northwestern.

The Weinberg College of Arts and Sciences approved of the major on Wednesday. The curriculum will include both existing and new classes.

The major has 25 credits, which includes six neuroscience units, 13 units in related coursework, and six units in allied fields. The allied fields consist of different aspects of neuroscience, and in this major, they include human behavior and cognition, language and human communication, computation and systems modeling, biology and chemistry.

Neurobiology professor Catherine Woolley, who led the process in creating the major, said the major would be interdisciplinary. In order to create the major, she and the committee gathered feedback from students and professors in various fields relating to neuroscience.

If students are interested in this major, Woolley will hold informational sessions about the neuroscience major later this quarter.

This major has been in the works for quite some time now – read more about the process to creating it here.
