Let the battle begin

MySpace will start selling music by the end of the year.MySpace will sell music from its 3 million independent bands. Bands choose how much their tracks cost. This band is selling tracks for 79 cents.

Remember that Myspace.com is the single most popular site on the Internet right now, beating out mail.yahoo.com and www.yahoo.com. (But not if you put all Yahoo sites together.)

This feels like a significant test of social networks and digital media. Can a network of unsigned bands and 100+ million users compete against a dominant iTunes store backed by traditional media companies?

(Or are they just different markets?)
