Krzyston hearing pushed back

The trial of a former Northwestern student accused of providing vodka to Matthew Sunshine, the SESP freshman who died last June from alcohol poisoning, got off to a false start Wednesday morning.

The preliminary hearing for Alexander James Krzyston, 22, was moved back two weeks after prosecutors told the judge they weren’t ready to proceed.

Krzyston, who was a McCormick student last spring, was charged a month ago with unlawfully providing alcohol to a minor.

Evanston police said Sunshine participated in a drinking game on the night of June 9, and that Krzyston provided the alcohol. The Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office said that Sunshine’s .396 blood-alcohol level that night directly contributed to his death.

Asked Wednesday about the case, Krzyston declined to comment. He is to return on Jan. 27 to the Cook County Circuit Courthouse in Skokie, Ill.
