Glee: “Laryngitis”
By

First of all, laryngitis is not that bad. Secondly, Rachel is a bit of drama queen, but she is given a theoretical slap in the face when she gets laryngitis and meets someone in an almost-similar situation. (Warning: you might want some tissues.) Puck gets a haircut and, as a result, is sent to the bottom of the high school food chain. However, he starts flirting with Mercedes (all of a sudden very popular, being a cheerleader and all) to get his shaven head back in the game. He wears a fedora, sings jazz and dances (much like Heath Ledger a la 10 Things I Hate About You). There’s also a cat fight song in which Mercedes and Santana sing “The Boy is Mine” about Puck.

Kurt is still jealous of Finn spending so much time with his dad. To retaliate and get attention, he starts acting like his dad (yes, with a trucker hat and steel-toed boots), tries out being straight and sings John Mellancamp…then back to musical theatre with Gypsy. (Sing out Kurt!)

Music Tip: Doesn’t it feel good hearing and singing music that speaks to you? This is often why musicians stay in similar styles because it speaks to them and their listeners. I loved the “voice lesson” Rachel gives. I’ve never seen a lesson sans piano, and this was more of a jam session. Even so, it shows how music really can touch someone, brighten their day or emotionally connect with other people.
