Can Internet traffic be a public source?

    Apparently, it’s simple to grab other people’s communications on a public wireless network, says Robert Scoble. In fact, your instant messages are sent out in plain text, so anyone can see what they are if they’re on the same network.

    So… if you’re having an IM conversation in a public place on a public network, do you have expectation to privacy? Can journalists use that information, as if they basically overheard a loud conversation?
