University police evacuated the Music Practice Building mid-afternoon on Friday after a music student alerted facilities management to damage at a section of the roof, according to Al Cubbage, Vice President for University Relations.

The report indicated that a section of the roof was separating from the wall inside the building. Cubbage said facilities management is currently on-site to survey the damage and determine how long the building will remain closed.

According to Mark Mitchell, a manager at the Office of Risk Management, a structural engineer will assess the building later today to determine what solutions are available for the building.

Located at 1823 Sherman Ave, the Music Practice Building was built in 1915 and is commonly known to students as the Beehive. A chainlink fence will be completed by tonight to prevent students from approaching the building, in case the roof were to collapse completely.

Commander Darren Davis with University Police is requesting that students refrain from walking through the lot east of the Beehive for the time being.

    More to come.
