A&O and SEED announced Wednesday that The Deadly Gentlemen will headline Saturday's Philfest 2014, a day of bluegrass and folk music.
Philfest will also feature artists Sunnyside Up and Todd Kessler.
The show will begin at 1 p.m. with Sunnyside Up. Todd Kessler and the Deadly Gentlemen will follow. The event will open at 12:30 p.m. and will be held on Norris East Lawn. Admission is free.
The Deadly Gentlemen are a Boston-based bluegrass quintet, but their music draws on influences from other genres as well. Greg Lizst, the band's banjoist, vocalist and songwriter, earned a Ph.D. in molecular biology from MIT.
Sunnyside Up promises an “uplifting performance” that combines jazz and rock with bluegrass. The band has played around Chicago for more than ten years. Todd Kessler was a contestant on season three of NBC’s The Voice, and he worked in the Chicago music scene starting in 2005 by “getting his hands on every open mic he could.”
In addition to music, Philfest will include activities like tie-dye, bottle bricking and slacklining.
The festival honors former SEED member Phil Semmer, who died in a car accident while studying abroad. Philfest’s logo is a gecko, which was Semmer’s favorite animal. Semmer's favorite kinds of music were bluegrass and folk.
