Arcadia University, the school facilitating several study abroad trips for Northwestern students, sent an email regarding the death of Weinberg junior Alyssa Weaver on Wednesday to students studying through their program. Weaver was an Art History and Chemistry major studying Visual Cultures at Goldsmiths College at the University of London.
According to a statement released by Goldsmiths Monday morning, local police found no evidence of foul play.
"Lewisham Police are investigating the matter but do not believe the circumstances to be suspicious," the statement read. "The student's family have been informed and we will be offering counselling to fellow students and staff."
Vice President of Student Affairs Patricia Telles-Irvin wrote an email to the student body Friday night expressing her reaction to the news from overseas.
"On behalf of the University, I extend our sympathies to Alyssa's family and to her friends here at Northwestern," Telles-Irvin wrote. "Members of the Student Affairs staff are planning to meet with members of her sorority on Sunday evening when students return to campus. Any students who wish to talk with someone from the University's Counseling and Psychological Services staff may call 847-491-2151 at any time. Members of the Chaplain's Office are also available."
The Associated Student Government also sent out condolences in a statement: "Though flashes of strength in the darkness of sorrow never come easily, we are fortunate to have friends and family in our Northwestern community that can help light the way. We continue to be stronger united as One Northwestern than we ever could be individually. Please join us in showing compassion and love for Alyssa’s friends and family," the statement read.
Hailey Arterburn, McCormick junior and president of Chi Omega's Xi chapter — of which Weaver was a member — released the following statement, "On behalf of the Chi Omega Chapter at Northwestern, we would like to extend our deepest sympathies to Alyssa Weaver’s family. She was an invaluable member of our chapter. Alyssa brightened everyone’s day with her unyielding enthusiasm and contagious smile," the statement read. "Alyssa had a vibrant personality and was driven to follow her dreams. She gave so much of herself and made such an impact on everyone she met. She was loved by her family and friends and will be dearly missed."
