Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night opens in Shanley Pavilion Thursday, playing a total of five shows over the course of the weekend.
The play follows Viola, played by Communication sophomore Allison Lewis Towbes. After surviving a shipwreck, Viola decides to disguise herself as a man for safety. When she (still disguised as a man – we know, it’s confusing) agrees to help Duke Orsino of Illyria win the love of Olivia, madness ensues. Olivia falls for Viola (remember: Olivia thinks Viola is a man) and Viola begins to fall for Orsino.
Sound familiar? Maybe you saw Amanda Bynes pre-breakdown as Viola in She’s The Man, a modern day adaptation of the play. (If not, we highly suggest it).
The production is put on by Lovers & Madmen, a group that specializes in classical and classically-inspired plays, and the set features a bridge and a pond, making for what Lewis Towbes said was an incredibly intimate relationship between the audience and the cast.
The show runs this Thursday, April 28 at 7 p.m., Friday, April 29 at 7 p.m. and 10 p.m. and Saturday, April 30 at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m.
