Fall Quarter classes next school year will start Thursday, Sept. 27, 2012, two days later than previously planned, the University announced Thursday in a school-wide email.
The change was made according to the University’s Calendar Principles, which state, “When Rosh Hashanah or Yom Kippur affect the first day of Fall classes, the first day of classes will be changed.” Yom Kippur, a fast day and one of the holiest days on the Jewish calendar, begins at sunset on Tuesday, Sept. 25, 2012 and continues until sunset on Wednesday, Sept. 26.
The change will shorten the quarter by two days. Exams for the quarter will end Friday, Dec. 14.
Fall Quarter classes began Sept. 20, 2011 this school year, and Sept. 21 the year before.
