Second student charged in Matthew Sunshine case

A former Northwestern student was arrested in late January in connection with the death of Matthew Sunshine in June 2008, according to Evanston Police.

Rohith Olin Banerjee, 21, was charged with “unlawful possession of an alcohol beverage by a minor,” a misdemeanor, according to Cmdr. Tom Guenther of the Evanston Police Department.

Banerjee, who was not yet 21 at the time, “had in his possession some alcohol which was consumed by people who were gathered” on the night of June 9, 2008, when Sunshine consumed the excessive amounts of alcohol that ultimately led to his death, Guenther said.

Sunshine’s .396 blood-alcohol level that night directly contributed to his death, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office.

Banerjee’s preliminary hearing will be held April 23 at the Cook County Circuit Courthouse in Skokie, Ill.

Banerjee is the second person arrested in connection with Sunshine’s death. Alexander Krzyston was charged in December of unlawfully providing alcohol to a minor.
