Twelve ladies giggled and laughed as the instructor standing before them began to shimmy. “And one more thing,” she said to her students. “Don’t be afraid to touch!” Candus Suppelsa’s comment referred to Zumba, an aerobic exercise routine inspired by Latin dance.
As a community outreach event, Lululemon Athletica Inc., coordinated a free Zumba class with Delta Gamma to get to know students, Lululemon store manager Brittany Puglia said. The class was taught by Suppelsa, who also teaches the advanced mixed conditioning class “Total Body Workout” at SPAC.
Delta Gamma’s Director Of Activities Alison Goldman helped set up the event, where sisters from the sorority got a full workout and learned some basic Merengue, Tango, Mambo and Cha-cha steps.
“We all had a blast, I think,” the Medill sophomore said. “The music was fun. The dancing was a blast. We were really grateful to have an exciting study break.”
Studying for a chemistry midterm, Weinberg freshman Brite Hvide and Communication sophomore Ilana Ramer came downstairs and decided to join in on the fun as Suppelsa began belly dancing. Shaking their hips, shimmying and doing some fancy footwork, Delta Gamma sisters enjoyed their study break.
“I thought it was really great. It was really fun and energetic,” Brit Hvide, Weinberg freshman, said. “It gave me a brain break.”
This event is part of a community outreach series Lululemon planned.
“If anyone sees us on campus doing yoga, feel free to come and join us,” Puglia said.
