Occupy NU occupies the Rock (to paint it)

Occupy NU paints the Rock purple on a chilly November day

After weeks of protests in cities and college campuses, participants in the Occupy movement painted the Rock Wednesday night.

"The average Northwestern student has $20,000 in debt by the time they graduate, and that's just ridiculous. Education should be for everyone," said Weinberg junior Mauricio Maluff, who guarded the Rock on Wednesday night. "It's really important that we show our solidarity with the protesters who have been abused and evicted around the country."

Northwestern first saw an Occupy protest when Eric Cantor spoke on campus Oct. 28, but now some students are revamping the movement to protest student debt and to show their support for protesters in New York and at the University of California Berkeley.

Occupy NU will be holding a "teach-in" at the Arch at 4:30 p.m. Friday, followed by a "March from the Arch" parade whose route is not yet determined.
