NU in 60 Seconds: May 1

A trio of worldly/activist events are on the docket today, so you may have to choose whom you support. The Rock will play host to a Hillel’s Holocaust memorial vigil at 6 p.m., and the College Feminists’ “Take Back the Night” march at 7:30. Meanwhile, Africa Awareness Week will draw to a close with a “performance and fine arts night” at 7:30 p.m. on Norris’s ground floor.

And you thought the story was so last quarter: In a meeting with alumni and students Tuesday, Medill Dean John Lavine conceded that he ”really blew it” with his use of an anonymous quote in Medill’s alumni magazine.

Luckily, Northwestern has other people who are truly making a difference in the world. Northwestern grad Matt Cozza created a commercial for a Heinz contest, won, and earned $57,000.

Rather impressive for an ad about ketchup, but professors Paul Milgrom (econ) and Simon Donaldson (math) won a slightly more prestigious award: Northwestern’s Nemmers Prize in economics and mathematics, which is worth $150,000. The two will spend 10 weeks on campus working with students and faculty.

Engineering students may soon be able to have a major that’s comprehensible to all. Starting this fall, the McCormick School of Engineering and Applied Science will offer a concentration in architecture and design. Hopefully these future architects will not be asked to take example of the main library. Or Tech.
