May Week brings Bond jokes and scholarship ball
By

Wednesday evening a small group of students attended “Debt Royale,” a informational meeting on student loans which included a screening of the documentary Default and a Skype session with the producer. Many of the same students ventured down to Wrigley Field on Thursday night with members of the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc. to participate in NU Day at Wrigley.

These events are the latest activities hosted as part of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc’s annual May Week. May Week is a national tradition of Delta Sigma Theta that has been held in some form at Northwestern’s chapter for at least 40 years, according to Theta Alpha Chapter President Eryn Rogers.

This year’s celebration includes ten events with a variety of focuses related to the mission of the sorority, including a service opportunity and a cultural food night.

“Most of the events fall under the sorority’s five-point thrust: economic development, educational development, political awareness and involvement, international awareness and involvement, and physical and mental health,” said Rogers.

This year, the chapter wanted to do something different to brand the event and make it “more enticing,” said Rogers. Based on the ideas of fellow chapters, the Theta Alpha Chapter decided to select a theme for the week. All of the titles for events use the titles of James Bond movies, such as the NU Night at Wrigley event – named “Thunderball.”

Rogers has been pleased with turnout at events so far this week, but she is most excited for May Week’s traditional culminating event, the Jabberwock Scholarship Ball on Friday night. It will be held at the Hotel Allerton on Michigan Avenue.

“We give out a scholarship to a deserving female high school senior to use towards her college education,” said Rogers, “and it’s also just a really fun evening of dinner and dancing with a diverse group of students from the Northwestern community, other Chicago area schools and NU alumni.”
