Lacrosse ends home schedule with emphatic win

Northwestern’s women’s lacrosse team played their final home game of the season Saturday afternoon against Rutgers, and the seniors put on a show. The 19-7 win gives the No. 7 Wildcats (13-3, 5-0 B1G) their eighth straight as they head into their final regular season game of the year.

Senior Shelby Fredericks had a remarkable final game at Martin Stadium with nine assists, one short of the school record. Eight of her helpers came in a dominant 13-5 first half, giving the Wildcats a comfortable lead and allowing coach Kelly Amonte-Hiller to rotate in seniors who typically get less playing time. Fredericks won a game high nine draw controls to help the Wildcats dominate possession throughout the competition.

Seniors Danita Stroup and Sheila Nesselbush and junior Selena Lasota each scored four goals in the contest. The three of them make up Northwestern’s top three scorers and have combined for an explosive 111 goals.

Freshman Tara Chelios, daughter of former Chicago Blackhawk Chris Chelios, had her first career goal to finish the game and put an exclamation point on the win.

The win continues Northwestern’s undefeated Big Ten campaign, which will face its biggest test next week when the Wildcats travel to No. 3 Maryland. A win against the Terrapins would secure a regular season B1G title for the first time since 2013.
