Women’s Soccer
In thrilling fashion, sophomore Addie Steiner netted an overtime goal in the 97th minute to lead to ‘Cats to a 1-0 victory over No. 14 Rutgers on Sunday. Steiner is the leading scorer for the team this year with nine goals. Freshman goalkeeper Lauren Clem had five saves on the night, included a crucial stop in overtime.
Grade: Beating ranked opponents is always fun, especially in overtime at their place. Women’s soccer gets an A.
Men’s Soccer
Both Cole Missimo and Mike Roberge scored in No. 19 Northwestern’s 2-0 shutout of Rutgers. Goalkeeper Tyler Miller had his 35th career shutout in Evanston, a program record. The ‘Cats converted 40 percent of their shots on goal.
Grade: The ‘Cats have won seven of their last eight games, and this weekend helped Northwestern soccer sweep Rutgers soccer. Men’s soccer also gets an A.
Women’s Tennis
Two Wildcats, Lok Sze Leung and Alicia Barnett, were defeated in the quarterfinals of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association’s Midwest Regional tournament. A doubles team of Barnett and Brooke Rischbieth made it into the semi-finals round of the doubles draw but fell to a squad from Notre Dame. The tournament concluded on Monday, Oct. 20.
Grade: A strong showing from doubles and having two Wildcats in the round of eight for singles gets women’s tennis a B+.
Field Hockey
Northwestern’s Field Hockey team is now tied for first place in the Big Ten after a 5-2 victory over Michigan State in East Lansing this past Sunday. The No. 9 ‘Cats scored three goals in the first half to build a healthy lead over the Spartans, and matched Michigan State’s two second half goals to seal the win.
Grade: Continuing to dominate the Big Ten gets field hockey an A.
Cross Country
With 739 points, Northwestern placed 31st out of 44 teams at the ISU Pre-Nationals Invitational this past Saturday. Sophomore Jena Pianin shaved more than 30 seconds off of her best 6K race time to finish 33rd overall, the only Wildcat in the top 100. Big Ten Cross Country Championships are on Nov. 2.
Grade: Only one Northwestern athlete placed in the top 100 runners of the meet. Cross country gets a C.
Women’s Golf
Finishing their fall season, the Wildcats placed 5th of 12 teams at the Stanford Intercollegiate, coming in at 1 over par, a program record for a 54-hole tournament. Hannah Kim and Suc Tangkamolprasert led the Northwestern golfers by each finishing 2 under par. The ‘Cats score of 853 was narrowly bested by the Washington Huskies’ score of 851.
Grade: With 1st, 2nd and 3rd place out of reach, the ‘Cats fought with four other schools for 4th place, but finished fifth overall, getting women’s golf a B+. Also, apparently the tournament was hosted by Condoleeza Rice. That doesn’t affect their grade, but it’s neat.
