Women’s Soccer
Coming off of their only Big Ten win of the season, the Wildcats put up 20 shots but failed to score in a 0-2 shutout loss to No. 12 Wisconsin. Three players – Addie Steiner, Sami Schrakamp and Niki Sebo – had more than two shots on goal, but ten saves by Wisconsin goalie Genevieve Richard kept the ‘Cats off the board. Northwestern is now 1-6-1 in the Big Ten, good for 13th.
Grade: A high volume of shots but zero points in a loss gets women’s soccer a C
Field Hockey
After a starting the weekend with a rough 1-2 loss against No. 7 Stanford this past Friday, the No. 8 Wildcats responded with a powerful 4-0 shutout of the Central Michigan Chippewas, including a hat trick from junior Kelley Stump. Despite the win and loss this weekend, field hockey remains the only undefeated team in the Big Ten and still stand atop the conference.
Grade: Loss to a great opponent, but a shutout win after one day of recovery gets field hockey a B+
Volleyball
The Wildcats suffered their second straight loss this past Saturday night, falling to Ohio State in four sets. Despite the ‘Cats hitting .275, compared to the Buckeye’s .204, and the Ohio State committing 26 errors, Northwestern was only able to win the third set of the match. Three Wildcats had over ten kills, and sophomore Caleigh Ryan led Northwestern with 29 assists.
Grade: A loss to an unranked opponent gets volleyball a C-
Cross Country
After a rough team finish at last weekend’s race, cross country tallied 138 points in their fifth place finish at the University of Wisconsin-Parkside Rosa Invitational. Junior Rachel Weathered was the fastest Wildcat in the 5k with a 18:34.8 finish, good for 22nd place overall. Three other Northwestern runners placed in the top 30. The ‘Cats missed out on fourth place by a mere seven points.
Grade: Top five team finish, but still plenty of room to improve gets cross country a B
Men’s Golf
Men’s golf jumped three places in the second day of the Rod Myers Invitational to finish sixth out of twelve teams this weekend. The Wildcats finished at +12, just behind Charlotte, who ended the second day at +11. Freshman Dylan Wu, tied for 23rd, was the only ‘Cat under par at -1.
Grade: A sixth place of 12 finish is nothing too exciting, but moving up three spots in the second day gets men’s golf a B-
Women’s Tennis
On the final day of the University of Virginia Fall Invitational, no Northwestern teams lost a game, going 4-0 on the day. The Wildcats won the consolation finals of both doubles draws, and a team of freshman Alex Chatt and sophomore Brooke Rischbieth took third place in the Blue doubles. Senior Lok Sze Leung took second place in the Blue singles draw.
Grade: Strong doubles, lackluster singles gets women’s tennis a B
Fencing
Over three days, Northwestern fencing had another strong showing against some of the nations’ best at the United States Fencing Association October North American Cup. In fields of up to 150 fencers, the Wildcats’ sophomore Cindy Oh placed 26th in women’s saber, junior Kaitlyn Wallace finished 32nd in women’s epee and junior Charlotte Sands placed 28th in women’s foil.
Grade: Competing against Olympians and highly touted opponents gets fencing an A-
