Flubbed song aside, NU fans rally in San Antonio

The highlight of the Alamo Bowl Pep Rally on Saturday night came courtesy of a musical oversight. One Wildcat dance number was soundtracked by “Eye of the Tiger,” the classic montage music from Rocky III. Nothing seemed amiss during the initial cymbal crashes, but as the song went on the situation in the Arneson River Theatre turned awkward. NU fans, once swaying along, slowed down as they realized just exactly what they were singing. Missouri Tiger fans — emphasis on “tiger” — reveled in the selection, singing louder than anyone on the other end of the theatre. Of all the songs in the world, NU performers ended up dancing to the one tune perfect for Missouri.

This musical mishap stood out during an otherwise fine pep rally for the two schools, who play Monday night at the Alamodome. Fans packed the theater, splitting the venue into two distinct sides: One covered in gold and black, and one in purple, each equally loud in supporting their school during cheerleader performances. Both teams entered via riverboat, as did the two bands. And, “Eye of the Tiger” aside, NU didn’t disappoint, with Wildcat fans matching (and sometimes surpassing) Missouri chants, and head coach Pat Fitzgerald delivering an energetic speech that excited the purple-clad masses even more. Not a bad showing for either school. But next time, double check the lyrics sheet.
