In an email, Dean of Students Burgwell Howard invited off-campus students to a town hall meeting Oct. 26 in Ryan Auditorium in Tech. The meeting seeks to hear concerns from students about off-campus living. Howard hopes to begin to outline some plans to address these concerns.
“This will be an opportunity for us, as the NU community, to talk about these issues before involving City officials and non-student neighbors in the discussion,” he wrote. Howard added that there would be a similar meeting with the city later in the quarter.
This comes a week after Howard sent an email reprimanding off-campus students for conduct at football tailgates. The next day his email was on Gawker.
“As we rode home past houses on Maple you could actually smell the alcohol and urine wafting from the houses, it smelled like a bar at 4 a.m. closing and was nauseating,” a neighbor was quoted as saying in Howard’s first email.
The invitation also included tips about off-campus safety, specifically relating to the attempted mugging of a female student Wednesday.
