The Daily Illini leads this morning with coverage of Illinois’s triumph over Northwestern, and it’s where we start too. Ethan Asofsky begins with that most repugnant of things, a cheerful Illinois Head Coach Ron Zook story, before giving a bit of background on the Wildcats:
Last season, the Illini ran for 519 yards against Northwestern in the Wrigleyville Classic. So when the Wildcats arrived in Champaign on Saturday, they had one goal – stop the run.
For three and a half quarters, Northwestern’s strategy worked. Before Saturday’s game, Illinois averaged 209.8 rush yards per game. At halftime, the Wildcat defense held the Illini rushing attack to 32 yards on 23 carries.
NBN’s own coverage of the game is happily without Ron Zook quotes.
We move west with one helluva lede from Dan Hoppen at the Daily Nebraskan, on the University of Nebraska’s first BigTen game—and first BigTen loss—to Wisconsin this Saturday:
The Husker athletic department called for fans traveling to Madison this weekend to wear dark colors for a road “blackout.”
After the game, most fans likely wished they blacked out during the second half.
Doug Burger, also at the Daily Nebraskan, writes that NU—meaning Nebraska (this could get confusing fast)—“proved Lee Corso wrong” after he chose NU on ESPN College GameDay. That must be quite the honor; you’ll remember that NU (this is Northwestern now) proved Corso right when Lee picked the Illini to trump the ‘Cats at Wrigley last year.
Meanwhile, back east, both the Daily Princetonian and Yale Daily News lead with news that crime on their campuses has fallen. A Yale official proclaims, “Everyone should be aware of the facts, and then they’ll conclude rightly that crime is not an issue at Yale.” Crime at Princeton, meanwhile, “has reached its lowest levels in over a decade.” New Haven, Yale’s home, has a reputation as being seedy, and Princeton had struggled with gang violence over the previous decade.
