ASG weekly update, Jan. 19: cell phones, transitions and off-campus housing
By

The ASG Executive Board met for the third time this quarter, outlining ideas for several long-term plans they hope to see take effect through the year.

The off-campus housing guide. Board members are collaborating with university representatives and NUIT to develop a new off-campus housing website as a resource for students. Technology committee members have been observing similar resources at other universities and plan to flesh out the actual website over an extended period of time. This new housing website accounts for one in a series of media outreaches ASG is planning to make for the student body, in addition to a revamped ASG website that seeks to connect more directly with the university, as well as a campus-wide newsletter.

Can you Hiro me now? Good. ASG Vice President Hiro Kawashima presented plans for a campus-wide survey to improve cell phone reception at Northwestern. The board wants student input on reception in dorms, dining halls, the library, and other campus facilities. Working with NUIT, they look to develop such a survey in the coming months once funding becomes available.

Out with the old. Plans are also being put in motion to establish a smoother transition process from one ASG administration to the next. Kawashima outlined an archival system that would make all pertinent ASG emails and documents available for future board members. President Claire Lew indicated that the board would utilize a $10-per-month online database service to store the group’s files. “We need something that can make this information readily and perpetually available,” Kawashima said. “This plan puts a wealth of experience and data in the hands of executive members that will come in later.”
