ASG update, Feb. 9: Brothelgate amendment and the birth of Noogle
By

ASG and Pres. Schapiro are looking to make Deering Field more accessible for events. No word on whether that includes snow BMX.

The ASG Executive Board convened for the first time in two weeks after Snowpocalyspe prevented last week’s meeting from taking place. President Claire Lew and company took time to check the progress of several projects that have been in motion throughout the year.

    • Brothelgate continues to stew, albeit in a much less intense fashion, as Lew and External Relations Chair Ethan Merel continue to work on proposing a “three-unrelated” amendment to Evanston city officials. Mayor Elizabeth Tisdahl and several city aldermen will attend the ASG Senate meeting March 2, providing an opportunity for direct communication between students and Evanston officials. ASG will present their proposed amendment as well as the petition regarding the “brothel law” at the meeting.
    • Lew reported that university officials accepted her proposal for an off-campus community service day during new student week. Starting this fall, around two thousand freshmen will have the opportunity to report to service sites around Evanston during their first week of college. “This can be a new tradition at Northwestern, and it’s a great opportunity to get involved with the greater Evanston community,” Lew said.
    • The distribution of activity funds to student groups may soon change to a quarterly format from the current yearly system. The plan is intended to help stop the rollback of funds to groups that do not utilize all their distributed funds. The Senate is still mulling over the issue.
    • The Deering Field survey that ASG began circulating last week has generated more than a thousand responses. Lew said that student reaction was largely in favor of making the site more accessible for events and student groups to reserve. ASG representatives will meet with President Morton Schapiro and officials from university facilities management to present the survey results and discuss ways to make it happen as early as spring quarter.
    • A new student resource website is set to go live within the next few weeks, Director of Student Life Matt Bellassai said. The site, called “Noogle,” will be an expanded version of the current NULink site where students can access email, CAESAR, and myriad university information and resources. “We wanted to create a place where students can go to get everything they need in one spot,” Bellassai said.
