ASG discusses Student Life Committee and the Diversity and Inclusion Committee priorities

ASG welcomed members of Senate back from Winter Break this Wednesday night with updates on the priorities of both the Student Life Committee and the Diversity and Inclusion Committee.

Student Life Vice President Chris Harlow addressed the Senate to announce the success of first quarter’s exam relief programs, such as the therapy dogs at Norris and the free cotton candy given away at the Rock.

“Our job is to sit on these boards with administrators and provide student perspectives on the issues at play,” Harlow said.

The Student Life Committee strives to improve many aspects on campus through working with groups such as the NU Alcohol Coalition, the Campus Coalition on Mental Health and Suicide Prevention and the Counseling and Psychological Services, as well as communicating with the Norris Programming Board to develop exam relief.

ASG also announced updates within the Diversity and Inclusion Committee. Vice President of Diversity and Inclusion Austin Romero emphasized the committee’s aim to realign its mission and vision, while increasing the accessibility of campus resources to all.

“The committee members and I realized there was a little of a disconnect,” Romero said. “I feel there are certain steps we need to take to make the community more inclusive.”

The meeting also briefly touched upon the Association of Big Ten Students (ABTS) convention arriving on campus later this week. A total of 90 delegates from the association will arrive this Friday and remain on campus until Sunday morning. The mission of ABTS is to increase intercollegiate communication and networking in order to “serve as the active collective voice of student of the Big Ten Conference,” as said in its mission statement.
