As the spring sports season heads into conference play and deep into their schedules, Northwestern continues to find success in individuals and teams alike. Highlights include a challenging series against Penn State for the baseball team and the continued performance from the men’s golf team. Women’s tennis took a minor slip heading south, but the lacrosse team maintained its vice-grip on NCAA dominance.
- Northwestern baseball went 2-1 over the weekend at State College against the Nittany Lions of Penn State in an error-plagued series for both sides. Pitcher Zach Morton was a superstar, displaying control on the mound and a wicked eye at the plate as well, in the tougher 3-2 victory on Saturday.
- In three games this past week, the women’s softball team struggled to put runs on the board and is in a lull as of late. Conditions were unfavorable, at best, as Northwestern was on the road for all three contests and fell to Iowa in terrible weather, and droppedtwo to No. 6 Alabama. Outscored 32-3, the ‘Cats will look to re-establish their offense and focus their pitching staff.
- The men’s golf squad took the Kepler Intercollegiate at Ohio State by storm, starring David Lipsky’s course-record matching 2nd round performance and Eric Chun’s 3rd round record this weekend. Overall, the team finished 3rd in the 11-team tournament.
- Over the weekend, the women’s tennis team fell victim to a Texas Two-Step in No. 1 Baylor and No. 27 Texas, falling 4-3 and 6-1, respectively. Senior and Texas native Lauren Lui was superb, toppling two ranked singles opponents, and giving NU their only match win against Texas.
- The men’s squad fell to both their opponents, as well, dropping contests to Purdue and Wisconsin, both at 5-2. Individually, Joshua Graves, Alex Sanborn, and Spencer Wolf notched singles victories during the weekend and look to bounce back Friday at Minnesota.
- The women’s lacrosse campaign steamrolled ahead with wins against Penn State and No. 6 Penn, 13-6 and 12-8, respectively. Senior Katrina Dowd scored four goals in each match, and junior Brook Matthews and sophomore Shannon Smith chipped in 5 goals total against Penn State. The Wildcats defend home turf this Friday against Johns Hopkins.
