Screening of 13th
13th, a documentary by acclaimed Selma director Ava DuVernay, looks at how the 13th Amendment shifted treatment of Black Americans from slavery to imprisonment, tying in issues of criminal justice reform and prison profiteering. The screening, presented by A&O Films, is part of the University’s Black Lives Matter programming. 8 p.m., McCormick Auditorium. Free.

Opening of Embracing the Chaos
The Dittmar Gallery will ring in the new year with Embracing the Chaos, an exhibit by Erin Elizabeth. Embracing the Chaos studies celebration and experience with undertones of social issues by creating art with cake, frosting and sprinkles. Reception 4 p.m., Dittmar Gallery. Open Jan. 6 to Feb. 12. Museum of Science and Industry tour
For the first One Book, One Northwestern event of the year, the University will give tours of the Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago. The tour includes presentations from Weinberg and McCormick faculty on weather, genetics and neighborhood development. Buses leave 11 a.m. at McCormick Foundation Center and return at 4 p.m. Free, lunch included. Sold out, waitlist is open.
Chicago spotlight: Free Admission Days at The Field Museum
If the Museum of Science and Industry isn’t your cup of tea, or if you’re a museum junkie, The Field Museum is offering two days of free admission this week. The museum, one of the world’s largest natural history museums, features three levels of exhibits. Jan. 4 and 5, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Free for Illinois residents and students with ID.
