Tragedy strikes championship quarterback

The mother of former Northwestern quarterback Zak Kustok, who led the Wildcats to their Big Ten Championship in 2000, was killed in her Orland Park home Wednesday morning. The state is holding her husband, Allan Kustok, 59, on suspicion of murder.

Anita Kustok, 58, was pronounced dead on arrival at Palos Community Hospital with a single gunshot wound to the head. Allan Kustok is being held on $2 million bail at the Kankakee County Jail. The crime was allegedly over knowledge of a potential affair by Allan Kustok, and made to look like an apparent suicide.

Zak Kustok was the signal caller for the Big Ten co-champion Wildcats ten years ago and responsible for the famed NU win over Minnesota on the play known as “Victory Right.” He also led Northwestern to a heart pounding 54-51 win over Michigan.

The 2000 Big Ten co-championship team will be honored this Saturday during the Purdue game at Ryan Field.
