Fencers take spots in top 50
The women’s fencing team had a nice showing at the USFA North American Cup this past weekend. Six Wildcats had top 50 finishes. Weinberg sophomore Dayana Sarkisova placed 16th out of 109 competitors in the women’s foil competition. Weinberg junior Camille Provencal placed 31st and SESP junior Devynn Patterson placed 35th in the women’s foil competition as well. Weinberg sophomore Kate Cavanaugh placed 43rd out of 127 competitors in the women’s épée competition while teammate, Weinberg freshman Dina Bazarbayeva, placed 48th. Weinberg sophomore Chloe Grainger placed 22nd out of 88 competitors in the women’s sabre competition. With the season just beginning, the future of the women’s fencing team looks very promising.

    Women’s golf sets records
Weinberg sophomore Lauren Weaver made history by establishing not one but two Northwestern women’s golf records.  Her first record was shooting a six-under 66, which made a single round record for the school. The second record was shooting an overall eight-under 208, which helped her win the Lady Northern Invitational. The rest of the team also did well, ending the invitational with a score of 11-over 875 and coming back from a six-point deficit behind Ohio State. Weinberg sophomore Annie Ormson had a career best round of one-over 73, which definitely helped the Lady Wildcats’ total score. All of their hard work led them to the second lowest team score in Northwestern history and also a second-place finish in the Invitational.

Field Hockey falls to Michigan State
The Wildcat field hockey team lost to #7 Michigan State this past Sunday by a score of 2-1. Communication junior Kaylee Pohlmeyer scored Northwestern’s only goal during the first half of the game. Weinberg sophomore goalie Amanda Wirth made six saves during the game, but a last minute goal by MSU dictated the final score. Northwestern now holds an overall record of 10-6, while Michigan State boasts a 12-4 overall record. Luckily, this game didn’t count toward Big Ten standings and the Wildcats have a chance to redeem themselves this Sunday when they play an away game versus Iowa.

    Volleyball can’t crack Sparty
The Northwestern volleyball team fell to Michigan State 3-0 this past Friday. Michigan State, whose overall record is 11-8, managed to defeat the Wildcats by winning all three sets at scores of 25-21, 26-24 and 25-18. Weinberg freshman Stephanie Holthus was the leader in kills with 12, while graduate student Christina Kaelin was not far behind with 11. The Wildcats trailed in the beginning of all their sets, except for set two. They started that set with a score of 10-6, but MSU eventually rallied back to defeat the Wildcats. The next game for the Women’s volleyball team will be a home game against Ohio State on Saturday.

    Women’s Soccer comes up short
So not only did the field hockey and volleyball teams lose at Michigan State, but so did the women’s soccer team. Northwestern lost to the Spartans by a score of 1-0. Although Michigan State took nine shots at the goal, compared to Northwestern’s 11, the only one that mattered was the one made by MSU’s Olivia Stander. The Wildcats tried to rally back, but none of their attempts to score were successful. Northwestern now has a Big Ten record of 1-4-1 and is set to play Iowa at home on Thursday, October 21.
