I know you ate the plums I was saving
for my morning snack today. You are caught
but I want you to know that I’m glad, not
angry. I know you liked the juice falling
down your chin; I was very much looking
forward to that sensation when I bought
them and applied the ice so they wouldn’t rot.
Just make sure you pass on the deed: smiling.
A quick smile does the world a world of good.
Easy, both on the lips and on the mind,
and free unless a few plums are consumed.
Lifting spirits the way that we all could
if not for our endless self-resign
to a realm that through detachment is doomed.
