The Cook County medical examiner's office confirmed Monday afternoon that McCormick sophomore Dmitri Teplov's death was ruled a suicide.
Evanston Police Cmdr. Jay Parrott also confirmed Teplov's cause of death and said the department's investigation is done.
"It's a very unfortunate instance," Parrott said. "But it's a very clear-cut investigation."
Teplov was found dead Sunday morning in Pancoe Hall. According to the examiner's office, Teplov's official cause of death was asphyxia due to vitiated atmosphere, a condition in which the body is deprived of oxygen.
This marks the second death that the Northwestern community has seen this year due to suicide. Weinberg junior Alyssa Weaver's death was ruled a suicide earlier this academic year in November.
"The University is committed to the physical and mental well-being of its students. President Schapiro has said that we will commit whatever resources are necessary to ensure that," said Bob Rowley, director of media relations for the University. "People are grappling with a very difficult thing at a very difficult time."
Dean of Students Todd Adams announced to residents at Foster-Walker Complex in a short-notice hall meeting Sunday night that the New York native died earlier that day. Staff from Residential Services, CAPS and the Chaplain's Office were also in attendance. Though Adams did not explicitly state the cause or manner of death, he emphasized that students were not in any immediate danger.
At 8:50 p.m. Sunday, Vice President for Student Affairs Patricia Telles-Irvin sent an email to students reporting the death of Teplov.
Telles-Irvin wrote that Teplov was found dead in Pancoe Hall on Sunday. According to the email, cause of death had not yet been determined but was under investigation by the Evanston Police Department and University Police. "There is no indication or threat to other members of the Northwestern community," Telles-Irvin said in the email.
An email was sent to residents of Foster-Walker Complex outlining similar details. The notice was sent by Area Coordinator Tiffany Gonzales. She also said community assistants would be on hand to speak with.
Adams expressed that any students experiencing grief or trigger reactions to seek counsel from CAPS, Residential Services or the Office of Religious Life.
