One of the most successful Wildcat teams in the last decade has gone under the radar, despite winning 16 (SIXTEEN!) straight Big Ten championships. The women’s tennis team’s run of continued Big Ten dominance began when today’s players were in elementary school.
We caught a glimpse of a typical practice through the eyes of senior Lok Sze Leung, who wore a GoPro while playing against sophomore Brooke Rischbieth during a practice last week.
As a member of last year’s Big Ten championship team, Leung won all three of her matches in the tournament in her No. 5 singles slot, helping the ‘Cats come back against Michigan to take the title.
The ‘Cats are currently in the middle of their off season and do not start regular season play until Feb. 1. Until then, they participate in tournaments and practice a few times a week, often incorporating match play into their routine.
Leung, a junior-transfer from Division III Middlebury, played her first season with the ‘Cats last year and was able to make an instant impact. In Northwestern’s most recent tournament, the UVA Fall Invitational, Leung made it to the final match of her draw, but was ultimately defeated by South Carolina’s Meghan Blevins 6-4, 4-6, 6-3.
They are currently playing in Champaign, Ill. in the ITA Midwest Regionals, which will continue through Tuesday.
