- The university announced that Subway will occupy the space in Norris currently held by Windy City Deli, nuSushi and Big Ten Cafe. The fast-food sandwich restaurant plans to open during Fall Quarter.
- Northwestern was ranked as the 12th best college in the country by the US News and World Report, tied with Johns Hopkins University and ahead of Brown University. In response to the rankings, president Morton Schapiro co-authored a Los Angeles Times editorial with Lewis and Clark College President Barry Glassner urging college applicants to consider more than just a university's ranking.
- Professors from Medill, McCormick and the School of Law began offering massive open online courses through the Coursera platform. Three additional courses will begin soon. More than 68,000 people from around the world have signed up for the Northwestern courses.
- Medill professor Candy Lee started teaching Northwestern's first course offered through Semester Online. About 20 Northwestern students have signed up for classes with the program, which offers courses from a number of partnering universities.
- Citing a U.S. Department of State travel warning urging U.S. citizens to defer travel plans to Egypt, the Study Abroad Office cancelled its fall programs in Cairo and Alexandria.
- University Police moved its headquarters from 1819 Hinman to 1201 Davis, citing a need for additional space.
- The football team is collaborating with McCormick to research the sleep habits of its players, to improve on-field performance.
- The space that formerly housed The Keg might become a brewpub.
- OfficeMax plans to open a small-format store at Sherman and Davis. It will be open by the end of the year.
- Athletic director Jim Phillips announced extensions for seven head coaches: men's wrestling coach Drew Pariano, women's softball coach Kate Drohan, women's golf coach Emily Fletcher, women's basketball coach Joe McKeown, women's tennis coach Claire Pollard, field hockey coach Tracey Fuchs and men's tennis coach Arvid Swan.
- Weinberg freshman Matthew Fitzpatrick won the U.S. Amateur Open and finished with the top amateur score at the British Open.
- Former Northwestern soccer player Matt Eliason scored a goal on a bicycle kick during a charity match with Lionel Messi, Thierry Henry and others at Soldier Field. The play topped SportsCenter's top ten plays list.
- Wildside collaborated with the University to open Fitzerland, a student tailgate section behind Ryan Field.
- A new Trader Joe's opened at 1211 Davis.
- The ride-sharing service Uber will begin operating in Evanston on Wednesday. Uber will offer free rides that begin and end in Evanston through Oct. 20.
- Medill junior Omar Jimenez won a rap battle aired on Late Night With Jimmy Fallon.
- Former Northwestern quarterback C.J. Bachér launched Huddle Pass, a website that offers college football commentary from dozens of former players.
- Protein Bar, a fast-food wraps and high-protein beverages restaurant, plans to open in the space formerly occupied by lululemon.
- Men's basketball coach Chris Collins purchased a $2.5 million home in Winnetka.
- The University hired Mary Baglivo to be the vice president for global marketing and chief marketing officer.
