Student election registration hits 1,000

More than 1,000 Northwestern students have registered to vote in November’s election, Northwestern’s voter registration group said Sunday.

Although NU Decides: 2008 had an unofficial count of 600 students as late as last Thursday night, Volunteer Coordinator Kim Castle said the group had registered 1,063 students before setting up its final registration table on Monday.

“This is obviously a really historic election and we are thrilled that all our efforts have worked out this successfully,” Castle said.

The group has been handing out registration forms and absentee ballots to students at the Rock and the ASG Activities Fair since students came back to campus. The deadline to register varies by state, but generally falls around 30 days before the Nov. 4 election.

After voter registration ends, NU Decides will hold issue-themed weeks as the election approaches. The organization is also planning a “Rock the Vote” rally, as well as a results-watching party on Election Day.

NU Decides will hold its final registration session on Monday in the Tech Lobby from 11:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.
