Tone down your makeup for spring

As the sun’s bright beams radiate from the sky, it seems safe to say that the gray dreariness of the winter is nearly behind us. And with this changing of seasons comes a shift in looks and trends in fashion. Here are some ways you can use cosmetics to achieve that perfect look to blend in to the blossoming colors of the spring.

First of all, as much as it may pain you, bid farewell to the beloved smoky-eye look. While it will always remain a safe bet for parties or nights when nothing is going your way, it’s time to replace the dark colors with lighter shades that create a serene, natural look.

“This seasonal palate has a lot of light pinks, meaning natural lips and natural make-up in general,” said Jessica Pierce, boutique proprietor of Benefit Cosmetics in Evanston, Ill. “Although Benefit as a whole does everything really natural, [this season] it’s lighter make-up, not very much foundation and more focus on the rosy cheeks.”

In other words, pull out the dusty pinks, soft peaches and skin-color blends. In terms of eyeshadow, aim for subtle shades of rose or light pink for blush, and try for lips that are glossy but far from loud. Lipstick by MAC has a particularly large array of choices, of which Politely Pink and Midimauve work well with the understated springtime feel.

The look is especially beneficial to those not so sure of themselves when it comes to applying makeup and who fear making a mess of the garish colors associated with winter make-up trends.

Trish Baldovino, retail business manager and make-up artist for Red Door Spa in Evanston, reiterates the delicateness of the latest trend: “Our makeup collection [for the spring] is bronzers, as far as powders and lip colors go. [We use] soft pinks and soft corals for blush, nail polishes and lipsticks.”

Essentially, make sure to refrain from layering your face with all sorts of colors and powders. Not only is your makeup more likely to melt under the sweltering heat of the spring, but it also masks the features that define your facial structure.

“[Spring is] not about the makeup, more about enhancing the features,” said Baldovino.

So be fresh, be minimal and just be you this spring.
