The women's lacrosse team went 1-1 this weekend, defeating Vanderbilt, 15-9, Apr. 10 and losing to No. 13 Johns Hopkins, 12-11, in overtime Sunday. Meanwhile, the women's tennis team celebrated senior day Sunday, honoring Veronica Corning, Nida Hamilton and Belinda Niu, and women's field hockey coach Tracey Fuchs was named to the USA Field Hockey Hall of Fame. But what did other Wildcats do with their time off?
Men’s tennis:
The ‘Cats continued their hot streak this weekend with two 5-2 wins over No. 62 Nebraska and Iowa. The No. 34-ranked Wildcats are now 17-9 on the season, including a 5-4 conference record. This weekend, three of the five Northwestern victories were in straight sets, including No. 54 senior Raleigh Smith’s defeat of his Nebraska. The team only has two more matches in the regular season before the Big Ten Tournament.
Women’s tennis:
Just like the men’s team, the women’s tennis team went undefeated on the weekend with home victories against Nebraska and Iowa. Against Nebraska, the No. 12-ranked ‘Cats swept the Cornhuskers, dominating in every match. All but one victory was in straight sets. This weekend was the team’s last set of home matches until the Big Ten Tournament, which will be played in Evanston the last weekend of April. They’ll head to Wisconsin and Minnesota this weekend to play their final two matches of the regular season.
Softball:
Up in Minnesota this weekend, the No. 23 Wildcats lost a three-game series against the No. 14 Golden Gophers two games to one. In the first game of the series, the ‘Cats put on an offensive frenzy, winning 13-9. That game saw 17 Northwestern hits, three of which came from right fielder Andrew DiPrima, who also scored two runs and had 2 RBI. The next two games didn’t go quite as planned for the ‘Cats, losing 13-5 and 3-1. They’ll play again Wednesday against Loyola before taking on Indiana at home in another three game series this weekend.
Baseball:
In the midst of a forgettable season, the baseball team had a major bright spot this weekend when they came back from a huge deficit to take down Iowa Friday in the first of the three game series. In that first game, the ‘Cats were down ten runs before mounting 11 unanswered runs in the last three innings to win the game 14-13. Center Fielder Luke Dauch went 3-for-4 with five runs, two RBI and two walks to help propel the ‘Cats to the improbable victory. They lost the next two games of the series, though, sending them to a season record of 6-24. The team’s next game is Tuesday, when Milwaukee will make the trip down to Evanston.
Men’s Golf:
At the Kepler Intercollegiate hosted by Ohio State, the men’s golf team came in tied for eighth out of 15 teams. The tough Scarlet Course at Ohio State kept scores high throughout the tournament. Sophomore Andrew was the top performer for the Wildcats, finishing the tournament in 13th place overall with a five-over 224. They play again next weekend In West Lafayette, Ind., at the Boilermaker Invitational.
