Cue the snarky jokes. Troubled British singer Amy Winehouseofficially checked herself into rehab in London last week, following weeks of cancelled shows and allegations of drug use.
“Amy decided to enter the facility today after talks with her record label, management, family and doctors,” said a statement issued by her label, Universal Music Group.
The announcement came a few days after British tabloid The Sun published a picture of Winehouse inhaling fumes from a pipe with the headline “Amy Winehouse on crack.” While police are still investigating, this isn’t the first time Winehouse has run into trouble with the law. The singer, who became famous for her anti-treatment song, “Rehab,” is at least as famous at this point for her numerous drug problems as her singing.
Winehouse previously entered rehab in August, drawing out of several North American concert dates. In September, she and husband Blake Fielder-Civil were arrested in Norway and fined $715 for possession of marijuana.
Despite the drug problems, Winehouse managed to pick up six Grammy nominations for her album, “Back to Black.” According to Universal, she still intends to perform at the Grammys on Feb. 10.
Here’s hoping she makes it. London’s already got Pete Doherty, and we’ve got Britney. The world doesn’t need another celebrity train wreck. Besides, a singer with her talent deserves better than to be known as “that crazy chick with the beehive who walks around London half-dressed and hungover.”
