Shwayze performing at Northwestern for Sigma Chi's Derby Days fundraiser

Sigma Chi and the Residence Hall Association will bring rising hip-hop artist Shwayze to campus early next month, the fraternity announced Thursday.

Shwayze will perform in the Louis Room Nov. 7 for Sigma Chi’s annual Derby Days philanthropy — a week of sorority contests benefiting the Children’s Miracle Network, which funds children’s hospitals around the country. Last year’s Derby Days raised more than $10,000, said McCormick junior Ben Shorofsky, who is leading the fundraiser.

Shorofsky said the fraternity chose Shwayze because they “wanted more of a party atmosphere.” For Derby Days 2008, Sigma Chi hosted mash-up artist The Hood Internet in the fraternity house basement. The fraternity did not bring an artist to campus this time last year.

“One of the things I wanted to do was make it a lot bigger” this year, Shorofsky said.

When Sigma Chi requested RHA sponsorship in the spring, the hall association agreed, offering to discount tickets for students living in residence halls. Tickets will cost $5 for RHA residents and $7 for other students. They go on sale Oct. 20 at RHA munchies and can also be purchased from Sigma Chi brothers.

The fraternity hopes to draw between 600 and 700 students, depending on how many university fire code allows.

“We plan to sell out the Louis Room,” Shorofsky said.

Editor’s note: The announcement came from Sigma Chi spokesman Kevin Short, who is also North by Northwestern’s politics editor.
