SAG Awards: Big wins and baby bumps
By

Thanks to the Writers’ Strike, award show junkies are having a difficult time getting their fix. The unfortunate cancellation of the Golden Globes meant no drunk celebrity moments or deliciously guilty fashion analyses.

Luckily, the SAG (Screen Actors Guild) Awards stepped in to fill the void. Usually swept under the red carpet in favor of the flashier Oscars, these tiny and relatively unimportant awards are receiving a wave of press attention.

The show, at two hours, was shorter than the Oscars but still managed to be boring. One thing I did enjoy: Angelina Jolie clearly hiding a baby bump (rumored to be twins) with a huge, flowing dress — as if that woman needs another child.

The Writer’s Guild, which allowed writers to work for the SAG Awards, is to thank for the awkward banter between presenters. One of the most sentimental moments was not scripted, however: Daniel Day-Lewis issued an impassioned plea asking the media to leave Heath Ledger’s family alone, saying, “We should just stop encouraging people to rake over every detail of his life.”

The best win of the evening goes to Tina Fey, who won Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Comedy Series for her truly fantastic television show “30 Rock,” and her co-star, Alex Baldwin, who won Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Comedy Series. Maybe her show will finally get the recognition — and audience — it deserves.

Queen Latifah also continued her reign of awesomeness by winning Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Television Movie or Miniseries for her role in “Life Support.” I don’t know what “Life Support” is, and honestly it sounds like a Lifetime movie, but she is badass so it’s okay.
