With an overwhelming 73.5 percent majority, Jan Schakowsky was re-elected as the representative of the Illinois 9th Congressional District. Having assumed office in 1999, this marks her 19th year as a congresswoman. Throughout her career in the House, she’s been considered one of the more progressive members of Congress. She serves as vice-chair for the Congressional Progressive Caucus, as well as the co-chair for the Caucus on Women’s Issues.
“Although I’m not deeply familiar with her as a candidate, I’m happy that our district is being represented by someone with progressive values,” said Communication sophomore Marisa Ray.
Schakowsky was one of eleven incumbent Illinois district representatives to keep their seats, as well as one of 10 democratic representatives elected thus far within the state.
