Purple Haze dominates International Collegiate A Cappella

Northwestern University hosted the second round of quarterfinals for the International Championship of Collegiate A Cappella (ICCA) on Saturday night at Ryan Auditorium in Tech.

Out of the ten competing groups in the Midwest quarterfinal, Northwestern University’s Purple Haze placed first. Northwestern’s Undertones placed second, and University of Illinois’ Xtension Chords placed third. Extreme Measures, the other competing Northwestern University group, failed to place.

Each year, from January to April, the college a cappella scene is divided into six national regions. The top two college groups at each regional quarterfinal advance to the college semifinals, and the winner then advances to participate in the finals, held at Lincoln Center in New York, where they compete for cash prices and the coveted title of Grand Champion.

At last night’s quarterfinal, Purple Haze’s KC Schlossberg won the title of Outstanding Soloist for the group’s rendition of “I’m Outta Love.”

Northwestern’s Undertones received additional acknowledgment with Outstanding Arrangement for Matt Edmond’s version of “I Will Follow You Into The Dark” by Death Cab for Cutie.

These top two groups will advance to compete in the semifinals of the tournament at the University of Michigan on March, 20.
